The Gems
Trifles and Troupes exhibition The Blender Galler, 2025

Based on a story I wrote of the same name, blending myth, fiction, and personal experience the piece explores themes of monstrosity, addiction, and mental health struggles.
The story follows a woman cursed to transform into an addicted, lonely, sleepless monster, a blend of woman and snake. The rusted form, a blend of symbols and events from the narrative, are merged into a single, formless entity with no clear shape, past or connection with anything, reflecting the protagonist’s monstrous transformation into something new. Parts from the story appear on the sides of the piece, linking it to the themes of media overconsumption and abandonment that define the protagonist’s life.

Rust is the central medium mirroring the monstrous force that takes over both the protagonist and the unfolding story. As the rust spreads over time, it makes the piece feel ‘alive’, constantly changing and decaying. This gradual transformation turns the familiar into something raw and unsettling, embracing ugliness and decay that exist at the core of the narrative.
